For a domestic oil-fired boiler in the UK, you should generally have it serviced once every 12 months. For vaporising appliances, this should be every 6 months (fuel quality dependent).
Annual servicing is especially important for oil boilers because the burner and fuel system can accumulate deposits and need adjustment for efficient, safe combustion.
- A typical oil boiler service includes:
- Cleaning the burner and combustion chamber
- Checking/replacing the oil nozzle if needed
- Checking the fuel pump and filters
- Inspecting seals and components
- Testing combustion efficiency and emissions
- Checking the flue
- Looking for oil leaks or water leaks
- Making sure safety controls work correctly

Though you may be tempted to immediately call Ramtech to request a call out, here are 6 basic checks you can perform prior to any requirement for a chargeable visit:- 1. Check all controls are working correctly. 2. Ensure all thermostats are turned up/calling for the boiler to fire. This includes making sure any batteries in room thermostats are still O.K. 3. Is the boiler on lockout? If there’s no light you may have to take the front cover off the boiler to check for a dull red or orange light. 4. Has the lockout tripped? If so, have you got enough oil? Check the oil level in the oil storage tank. Don’t trust an electronic device! Always use a stick or cane if there’s no sight tube. 5. Inspect the system pressure levels to ensure there is sufficient pressure in the system as some units carry a low pressure cut out switch and will not operate until the correct pressure is established. 6. Has the boiler over heated? Check the boiler high limit hasn't tripped. Refer to the user manual for the location of any user reset locations. If all the above has passed initial checks , get in touch and we will be happy to help resolve your issue.

Clear away foliage that maybe obstructing the tank. You need to make sure it can be easily accessed by the delivery team. Make sure the tank hatch is securely tightened down. It can blow away in high winds and let water inside the tank. Wipe away any fungus and mold away from any oil level tubes. It will only get worse as the winter progresses.
